Error Message Tone and Approach

  1. Be human. Use plain language and be conversational. (no more robotic sounding messages.)
  2. Be straight forward and helpful. Offer a solution if possible.
  3. Be calm. Do not use words that will stress out users more. No nasty alerts!!! No exclamation points.
  4. Be specific. Let's not use "catch all" messages for a variety of systems errors. For example, using "validation error" alone will not be enough or specific enough to work.
