Initially hidden behind a click or a hover

The user needs to click or hover to see messages. This is a familiar pattern with social media platforms. Messages may fall into buckets; each bucket may have its own bucket or icon, or as in the case of Pinterest (third example below), there's a single icon, that when clicked, exposes messages by category.
