Problem
English is a second language for many of our production staff, so written specifications are often misunderstood, leading to inefficient processes and production errors.
Solution
Supplement the written work order with a measured drawing (aka technical drawing) to improve comprehension of specifications and reduce production errors.
Eventually, we would like to provide these drawings via the web to customers (as well as Marketplace vendors), in the same way we provide them for printed items, but that is out of scope for this release. Nevertheless, this eventual use will influence our design and development approaches.
Data
From 4/1/16-3/31/17, there were 96,014 in-house made quotes. Of these:
- 4,597 were quotes for vented items - 1,250 or about 24/week, were converted to orders.
- Of these, 456 quotes were printed (RRP) - 101 were converted to orders (almost 2/week).
(In all there was a total of 4,297 RRP quotes; 658 were converted to orders.)
Design
I. Products that are only vented and not printed
Butterfly vents, user-specified placement - 1 page, no pagination
Randomly placed vents
Note: Mockup depicts hole placement along both sides. Hole placement along the center line is also an option for random. In that case we will shift the text explaining random placement to the right of the single line of centered holes.
II. Products that are vented and printed
Just as you have separate blueprint drawings for each layer of a building design - wiring, plumbing, elevations, etc. so too would we have separate schematics dedicated to:
1) Showing the complete picture - art on bag, with vents overlaid. Measurement lines indicate position of art. Production staff, and eventually customers, can each see how the finished product will look with vents piercing through the art. | 2) Showing just venting without the art, so that vent positioning lines and measurements can be shown, without interfering with art (and potentially being misconstrued as part of the art). This will also include a small postage-stamp sized close-up drawing of the vent hole type. Chris to supply clean b&w thumbnails for all vent hole types. | 3) Art detail (same as today). Note: If and when we show PMS color detail, we will show it on this page, rather than on page 1, where we will likely need to accommodate other thumbnails - see Pre-opened bags below. |
