When printing on anything but white film (with "color" opacity), or co-ex polymailers....
- When the art includes process printing - whether or not it also includes spot colors - default to inclusion of white backer with ability to opt out.
- When the art consists solely of spot colors - offer addition of white backer, but do not default to it.
In our user self-help tooltips ....
- Reposition "four-color" process print as typically being 5 colors.
- Try to show the difference in quality and opacity between an item printed with and without white backer. "What's in it for me?" Getting the job done right - if and when it matters.
- Explain the circumstances under which you might not need white backer - item will be filled with white contents like white paper, socks, t-shirts, very fine line drawings or fine print.
- Explain the differences between white backer and background. If the art includes a nutrition label or bar code, recommend a white block/background behind the art.
On a related but separate topic.... Dealing with intended and unintended white backgrounds
When user uploads art that has white background built in - provide tools for them to convert it to clear or tell us they need the background and need it to count as a color.
May not be possible when some of the white is supposed to be clear and some of the white is intentional.
