Scenario 1 – BioHazard

  • Clicked on “Random Repeat” right away.
  • Cautiously looked around, reading all of the buttons and paragraphs carefully.
  • Clicked on “Quick Quote”. (At this point, we were starting to get off track.  I asked him, why he had chosen “Quick Quote” and his thought process was “Well, I want pricing and don’t need to worry about artwork now.” In poking him further, his mindset was that he’s just generating the quote at this point and not necessarily designing anything. Yes, he understood he was looking at a “designer” to design a layout – but he felt compelled to click on “Quick Quote” and start with that. Thinking that maybe at a later point, he would be designing the bag itself.)
  • After starting over and directing him slightly of where he needed to be – he clicked on the BioHazard logo.
  • He was not confident when clicking the “Find” button. After he clicked it and realized what it did – he commented on how the button should be labeled something else.
  • I asked what he thought would be included in the “Download PDF” file and he said, it would contain the proof along with all the information about the quote.

Scenario 2 – Split Rock Lighthouse

  • Quickly clicked “Click here to get started”. (This time around, he knew to stay away from “Quick Quote”)
  • He selected “Browse” after he read the word “Upload” in the description. (Upon first glance, he wasn’t sure what to click based solely on the button text)
  • He clicked on the “File” input box, attempting to upload his file.
  • “I don’t see a browse my files…”
  • Once he located the “My Computer” tab, his response was “Oh, it seems pretty straight forward now…”
  • Quickly selected color.

Scenario 3 – Quick Quote

  • Quickly clicked on “Quick Quote”.
  • He was confused seeing the designer, when he was doing a “Quick Quote”. He felt compelled to do something (design something), but there was nothing to design.
  • I asked him to tell me about the pink lines/arrows and his response was, “I think that moves the image up and down.” (Which in effect, it does) And after about 15 seconds, he then realized that it might control the distance in between the images.
  • I asked him to tell me about the orange lines/rectangle and his response was, “I can resize the image by clicking on the circles on the corner”.
  • He had no idea what the rotate icon did.

Scenario 4 – jetBlue

  • He selected the “jetBlue” artwork quickly.
  • But once he was looking at the artwork in the designer he said, “I feel like I did something wrong”.
  • Upon starting over (he did the same steps over again) and finished the quote without any problem.

Scenario 5 – Caution: Hot Contents

  • Clicked on “Registered Print” quickly.
  • Clicked on “Add Text”.
  • He noticed the “Eye Spot” and said, “What’s that?” – I then asked, “What do you think it is?” and he said “I don’t know” – I followed that up with asking “Will that be printed on the bag?” and he said “I hope not!”.
  • I asked him how he would rotate the text and he said, “I didn’t notice this earlier” as he pointed to the rotate icon.  He then also noticed the similar icon, on the “Format Your Artwork” popup and thought he could rotate with that too.
  • In response to adding the text, he said “I thought I was going to add the text into an input box (on the popup) and not on here” as he pointed to the designer.
  • After the quote was finished and he was looking at the results, he said that he wanted to see the print – priced out separately from the rest of the quote. I then asked why and his response was “Because I’m afraid to get it wrong”.

Scenario 6 – Recycle #4

  • He quickly clicked on “Quick Quote”.
  • I asked, “Why did you click on Quick Quote?” and he said “Because it said ‘quote’”.
  • After starting over and guiding him a little bit, he was back on track.
  • I noticed he made no attempt to change the color, so I said “Is there anything else you need to do?” and he said “Well, I want to change the color but I can’t.”. (At that moment he thought he wasn’t able to, so didn’t attempt it. On a previous scenario, he tried to change the color and the colors didn’t work – so he assumed it was something that just wasn’t clickable in the mockup)

Scenario 7 – Menudo Mix

  • Quickly clicked on “Registered Print”.
  • Toggled through all 3 tabs, then finally clicked on browse. (He did not seem confident in his choice)
  • I asked him, “What would happen if you clicked on one of those colors?” (Pointing to the automatically selected colors) He thought that if he clicked on black, that it would change the entire artwork/image to black.

Scenario 8 – YMCA

  • Quickly clicked on “Registered Print”.
  • Clicked on “Click here to get started and quickly chose the suffocation warning.
  • Upon adding the second element, he was confused. He clearly saw the “Choose Art” icon, but he was looking for something that said “Add”.
  • When asked about the “Bring to front” and “Send to back” icons, he said “Those allow me to print on the front or back of the bag”.
  • He was stumped, when trying to figure out how to change the color of both elements. I asked what he was thinking and he said, “I’m looking for an eye dropper (color picker)”. After a few moments, he figured out where to select the color.

Additional Information:

  • I asked him to tell me what he thought about the whole experience and he said, “It seems pretty straight forward, but to get around to each thing is a little confusing… especially the three tabs”.
